During his appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast ‘Armchair Expert,’ Eric Dane discussed his departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and what he believes to be the true reason for his dismissal from the series in 2012. “I didn’t leave, but I think I was fired,” he said.

The 51-year-old actor portrayed Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as Dr. McSteamy, for six seasons; his character ultimately dies in a plane crash alongside Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh).

While the show’s producers never publicly disclosed the reason for Dane’s departure, the actor confessed that at the time of his dismissal, he was struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, but that wasn’t the reason he left the show.

“It wasn’t why they fired me, although it certainly didn’t help,” he said. According to Dane, the true reason was financial; “I was starting to become, like most of these actors who spend a significant amount of time on the show, very expensive for the network,” he explained.

Despite being let go from the series, Dane revealed he harbors no ill feelings and had many praises for Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator. “She fiercely protected us,” he said. “She protected us publicly, she protected us privately… I love Shonda Rhimes and she protected me, but I probably got fired. It wasn’t ceremonious like, ‘You’re fired,’ it was just, ‘You’re not coming back.'”
